Should Kids Be Given Cell Phones?

Cell phones are a part of life throughout the world, that is hard to deny. But what is the appropriate age for a kid to have a cell phone?

There are both advantages and disadvantages to letting kids have cell phones. One of the reasons against the idea is that if you give kids phones when they’re young, you’ll spoil them when they’re young. And giving expensive items to young kids may encourage them to continue to ask for pricey toys as they grow older. Having a phone gives kids a direct link to other kids and activities that may interfere with some of the more important parts of their lives, like school and studying.

There are, however, advantages to children having the use of cell phones. Cell phones can help them to be more responsible, and it also gives them experience with technologically advanced devices while they are young. Cell phones also provide a means for children to get help when an emergency arises and they need immediate assistance. It also gives them a way to check in with their parents so that their whereabouts are monitored. While it gives children more independence, it can also help them to feel trusted.

Considering all the above-mentioned pros and cons, it is safe to say that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. What is important is to still give them guidance in their use of their phones and do not buy the brands that are too expensive as it will just bring danger more than benefits. The bottom line here is it is the parents that could best decide for their own children knowing the type of personality their kids have. To them, a cell phone may be a necessity, a distraction, a luxury or just a fad.

It will be up to them if they want to spoil their kid or discipline them, both with the use of a cellular phone. It would be wise to also consider all the other factors involved when your kid will use a cell phone aside from just the pros and cons. This includes the costs, the features the phones have, the places where your kids will be using the cell phones and what the phones can access such as the Internet. All this may prove to either be a benefit or a disadvantage depending on how the parent may perceive it.
